Uthiri Pookkal is a Tamil film directed by J. Mahendran. The movie was based on Puthumaipithan's short story Chitrannai. This movie is a trend setter in Tamil cinema. This movie is said to be a trend setter in the Tamil film industry. The movie is considered as a break through in commercial Tamil cinema.

This is a story of a man who doesn't want to let anyone to live happily in a small village. Sundararaman(Vijayan) is the heir of a powerful family in that village. He has a family with a sick wife and two kids. Besides having a good wife,he allegedly wants to marry the sister of his wife threatening his father-in-law. He forces him to marry his younger daughter so that he(Sundararaman)will take care of all his debts. In the due course, his sister-in-law falls in love with a school teacher who comes to work in Sundararaman's school.At some point,Sundararaman's wife dies of illness and he marries another girl. But during the first day of the marriage of his sister-in-law,he molests her in his house when she arrives there to get his permission to carry his two kids with her after the marriage. When the whole village came to know about this,they catch and corener him so that he chooses his own way to end his life. The script and the dialogues are very crisp and said to be one of the finest movies ever made in Tamil cinema.

02.Azhagiya Kanne - SJanaki

Azhagiya kanne uravugal neeye in "Udhirippookkal". The song has nothing artificial about it as against songs that are picturised in movies. It shows the genuine love of a woman for her man and her children. The love between the children and the mother are shown as a melliya nool poondra paasam which is hidden but strong. The song is picturised in such a way that the woman who is in grief is a mother who has to take care of her little children and also has to think about her future without her husband who is not hers anymore. Her sadness, the children's innocence and the unknowingness of the future is so beautifully portrayed. The lost look in the mother's eyes (Aswini) and her tender love for her children are expressed beautifully. The line "manjal endrendrum nilaianadhu mazhai vandhalumE kalaiadhadhu" shows her strong love for her husband. The two children playing around the banks of the river, helping their mom in washing clothes and having fun is portayed for the line "sorgam eppodhum nam veetilE adhai naan kangirEn un kannilE". I just love this song.
