I wondered whether to pursue this genre here since it isn’t a celebratory tune. Then again, we are all adults here who’ve experienced our share of grief; death is part of life no matter how we regard it. Hence, should this SOTD strike you as inappropriate, please understand that I’m presenting it here in the interest of recognizing a cultural tradition and not to bring anybody down.
Songs for certain functions, community, and family gatherings have long been in themmAngu’s legacy. The oppAri genre is unique among these. Though a nearly extinct form of song in urban areas, the rural folk still practice it at funerals. While there are certain common verses that can apply for anyone’s passing, each family makes their suffering felt by injecting their personal anecdotes about the deceased when crying their hearts out. I’ve witnessed some of these unfortunate circumstances as a child. At that time, in keeping with the stoic Indian male’s thinking, I felt sorrow should be reined-in as in intimate emotion and not displayed in public. However, I have a different perspective now. Our ancestors had good reason to ritualize these emotions. I’m not for dictating how one grieves, but through oppAri the proper venting occurs and the necessary phase of grief is endured by the victims who might otherwise be in denial and cause more psychological damage to themselves and others.
IR as a singer is usually a contentious topic; one on which I’ve battled for and against him depending on the song. Nevertheless, when it comes to relaying the sorrow and angst of a shaken villager, there’s hardly any equal to IR among male TFM singers. Don’t get me wrong, there have been better male voices at this service, but none to deliver the colloquial diction, the son-of-the-soil emotion, and the blistering soul battling overwhelming odds like IR. Only a distracted mind or a cold heart can be untouched by his renditions in “thaalaattu maari pOnathE”, or “sOlai pasungiLiyE” (which, though it came in a movie, I heard IR penned and sang as a tribute to his own mother, after her passing).
The SOTD is still different among oppAris in that it’s not about the loss of a human, but a household creature that meant a great deal to the man who lovingly raised it. But why read my summary, hear the man sing this story.
