It was this tried and tested story then that ‘Charuchitra’ Srinivasan and K.Shankar decided to resurrect in Tamil in 1981. True to the Diwali tradition, Diwali of ’81 saw the release of many movies like Rajini’s raaNuva veeran, Sivaji’s keezhvaanam sivakkum, Bhagyaraj’s andha 7 naatkaL, R.C.Shakthi’s raajangam, KB’s thaNNeer thaNNeer and Devar’s anjatha nenjangaL. And along with them, balanagamma (Charuchitra Films) was also in the fray. It had Sridevi in the title role, supported by Saratbabu, Manju Bhargavi, K.R.Vijaya, Sudarshan and others. Screenplay and dialogues were by S.Jagadeesan. The film was produced by T.R.Srinivasan and directed by K.Shankar.
Ilaiyaraja’s tantalizing treat is perhaps the only factor worth remembering in this insipid adaptation. He must have found working on a folklore fantasy a refreshing change, and came up with a stunning album. ‘koondhalilE mEgam vandhu’ remains the most popular song of the lot, and quite deservedly so. IR had composed a pristine bilahari here, and who else but Yesudas could deliver this mesmerizing melody! With Sasirekha humming along, the song remains a classic(al) wonder. ‘neer kodukka piRandhadhamma Odai’ has PS singing for K.R.Vijaya and SJ singing for Sridevi. ‘paLLiaRaikkuL malligaiyai aLLi iRaikka’ is a feet-tapping Uma Ramanan number that found continued patronage by vividh bharathi. S.P.Shailaja sings the high-pitched ‘uNamiyai kaakkum sathiya neruppE’.
