Anjaneya combines Thaip pongal (1980) produced by M.Annamalai is remembered today for its melodies - thAnE sathiraadum, theerththak karaithanilE, kaN malargaLil azhaippithazh, pani vizhum poo nilavil. Very fittingly as mentioned in the titles, this film had Isaik Kolam by Ilaiya Raaja.



Vallabhan had a good story and wrote excellent dialogues. With low budget , no big starcast and average direction, the film just went into oblivion.The film revolves around a village girl Tamilselvi (Radhika) and her mother Janaki (Dancer Lakshmi). Selvi will never forget a thaippongal day when her father was killed in the traditional jallikkattu. With a 2 year old child, the young widow struggles to live a decent life. Vairam, a mechanic (Vijayan) helps her and she accepts her life to be his unwedded wife. The child grows up into young Radhika who has never accepted Vijayan as father. She hates him and he remains to be the “husband” of her mother. Vijayan is adamant to tie the thAli to Janaki until Selvi accepts him as her father. He becomes addicted to alcohol. Selvi joins the local typewriting institute where Sudhakar (Chakravarhty) is the teacher. Every evening when Selvi goes to the riverside to bring water, Sudhakar places Shenbagap poo in her kudam.Initially there is a short version of the song “theerththak karaithanilE” (only the pallavi) by Jency.

03.Theerththak Karai Thanile - KJJesudhas

Selvi’s close friend is Mary (a nice cameo played by the young Usha who later became Usha Rajender). Mary’s brother Susai (Rajesh) loves Selvi but is reluctant to tell her. Selvi’s mother is trying to find a suitable groom for her. It’s her unwedded status that is becoming the center of gossip in the village and eventually preventing Selvi’s marriage. Pretending to attend Mary’s wedding, Selvi and Sudhakar run away to the nearby town to get married. Being a coward he comes back leaving her all alone in the hotel room. Selvi comes back to the village adding a new title to her name “Odip pOnavaL”. Ignoring the gossips, she continues her life in the village.

Walking along the riverside, with memories of Selvi and her love and her laugh, it is now the turn of Jesudas singing this haunting melody for Sudhakar.

04.Pani Vilum Poo - Malaysia Vasudhevan & SPSailaja

The flute capturing a lazy morning whistle and the violin stretching the stroll. Then comes a feverish MV with a first line that could start a short story. MV has thrown off many songs where he belts out lines that should be whispered tongue-in-cheek, but here he is all poise and weathered like a gentle giant. The long pallavi continues our guessing game and almost stops abruptly with a short, monosyllabic word, thEn. And what we get is another surprise: SPS. Not the top liner in anyone's list but here she is all nimble charm and youthful spirit to MV's thick stoicism. The tune continues with the whimsical tempo as the yin and yang of bass and treble are so brilliantly balanced by a dirge-like bass (one of IR's best bass efforts), tablas, and whet-with-emotion male voice greeted by a crisply light female voice, dulcimer-thin strings, airy flute, and a rolling flow. The song and the soundtrack remain permanently in my Ilayaraja collectibles.
